What is mattress thickness?
How thick or what the height or depth of your mattress is known as mattress thickness.
Mattress thickness is measured from the top portion to the bottom portion of the mattress.
Now, let’s talk about the first factor…
There is NO standard rule about mattress thickness profiles.
But to differentiate one mattress’s thickness from another…
Here are 3 different mattress thickness profiles that are widely popular in India.

- Standard profile mattress
- Thick profile mattress

Low profile mattress:
2-4 inch mattress thickness is known as a low profile mattress. It’s ideal for cribs, toddlers, and guest rooms.

Standard profile mattress:
5-8 inch mattress thickness is known as a standard profile mattress. It’s nearly suitable for most adults.
It’s also widely available in the Indian market. And it also provides the best comfort!
Mattress’s comfort directly connects to the person’s body weight. I will discuss it later in the post.

Thick profile mattress:
10-14 inch mattress thickness is known as a thick profile mattress. It’s most suitable for heavyweight people.

Whether you agree with me or not, your mattress thickness has a strong correlation with your sleeping positions.
As you know there are 4 common sleeping positions.
If you sleep most of the time on your side…you’re a side sleeper.
You can consider a minimum of 5 inches or above mattress thickness for a comfortable sleeping experience.

The Comfort layer is the top layer which provides comfort while sleeping. It’s helpful for better movements while sleeping.

But in general, there are two layers that should always be there which are the comfort layer and the base layer.

If you sleep most of the time on your back…you’re a back sleeper.
You can consider between 6-12 inches of mattress thickness for a comfortable sleeping experience.
A thin comfort layer with a thick base layer is a great combo for a back sleeper.
If you sleep most of the time on your stomach…you’re a stomach sleeper.
You can also consider 6-12 inches mattress thickness for a comfortable sleeping experience.

If you switch between multiple positions like on your back, side, or stomach while sleeping then you’re a combination sleeper.
Most people are combination sleepers! Including myself. What type of sleeper are you?

Every person has a different body weight. So, to make it simple I’ve divided it into 3 parts.
- Light weight person
- Average weight person
- Heavyweight person
The first one is…
Light weight person:
If your body weight is less than 60 kg….5 inches or above thickness should be a great option for you.
The next is…
Normal weight person:
If your body weight is between 60-100 Kg…6-12 inches mattress thickness should be a great option.
And the last is…
If your body weight is more than 100 Kg…12 or 14-inch thickness should be a great option.
If you’re a couple with light to normal weight, 6-12 inches mattress thickness can be a great option.
And, for a Heavy couple, 12 or 14 inches mattress thickness should be a great option.
Obviously the thicker the mattress…luxurious the feels. And it may compliment your bedroom aesthetic as well!
It does not make sense if you can’t place your feet on the ground from your bed. Right?
Well. It’s a different scenario if you want to use a bed riser though.
But in general,, Your total bed height including the mattress on top of that…should be under 25 inches from the ground surface.
Otherwise, you may feel trouble getting in or out of bed.
However, The bed height totally depends upon the person’s height.
To know the exact bed height…measure the length from your knee to foot. Whatever the number you get…is your desirable bed height.
For example…my knee to foot length is 17 inches. So, 17 inches total height including the mattress will be a desirable bed height for me.
If my bed base has 11 inches in height then 6 or 8 inches of mattress thickness should be the best option for me to reach the ground surface without any trouble.
If you have any medical conditions it’s always better to ask for a suggestion from the doctor itself.
Definitely, mattress thickness or height plays a key role in finding the best comfort while sleeping.
And as you see there is no rocket science to find the best mattress thickness for yourself.
You just need to find what type of sleeper you are, and what your body weight is. Simple!
Even if you’re still confused about choosing the best mattress thickness for yourself in India…
Then you can go with a 6 or 8-inch mattress thickness. It’s most suitable for normal people.
And if you’re a heavy person…go with a 12 or 14 inches mattress thickness for better comfort.
